Having fun with facilitation
There are many studies that show how effective adding fun to facilitation improves attendees’ engagement, participation and enjoyment.
We know that it isn’t easy, especially if you are having to facilitate online! In fact, we are so into this that we have written a book on how to have fun with online facilitation, called The Online Facilitator’s Cookbook: Baking fun into your workshops.

Adding humour to coaching and mentoring
When David wrote his first paper on how he uses humour in coaching, he found out that there was very little existing research. So, in 2021, he started a 3-year doctoral research project into how to use humour successfully in coaching (yes, much to his kids’ horror, he is going to be a doctor of humour!)
Sure, there is much research into how humour can be used to help people (such as increasing how people perceive status, competence, confidence, trustworthiness; improving effectiveness; how it can improve professional athletes; the implications of using humour in social settings; using humour to heal, reduce stress, increase energy) … but nothing specifically relating to using humour in coaching. This is why I committed to 3 years of his life to it: I want to help coaches across the world employ humour in their coaching.
Let us share ideas
Research has been done on defining appropriate and inappropriate humour in teaching, as well as why some types of humour result in increased learning, the impact of humour on retention and recall, as well as how humour can increase creativity and encourage alternative thinking.
Hopefully that convinces you that humour is a useful essential tool to make any teaching and training stick.
